Why switch to XHTML?

Alright, so I think I'm at a place where I've accomplished my basic goals. I know HTML 4.01 in and out, use the Strict Document type along with CSS (obviously). But now I am working on my personal website, and I want to know before I do any major work, should I use HTML or XHTML? Now I pretty much guess you are all going to say XHTML, but I want to know, why? I've gone to W3 Schools (<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.w3schools.com">http://www.w3schools.com</a><!-- m -->) and the World Wide Web Consortium (<!-- m --><a class="postlink" href="http://www.w3.org">http://www.w3.org</a><!-- m -->), but neither really gives me a reason of WHY to switch.

What advantages does XHTML 1.0, or 1.1 offer over HTML? How widely is XHTML supported? Is it hard to make the switch from HTML strict to XHTML strict? If someone could answer these questions, I'd be much obliged.
