What are the features that you would dream of?

Ok, it's the first step to my contributions here. It is not an open thread for requests of existing stuff on vb.org, i will never provide anything from that site.

What i want to hear from you all, is "what is missing in vbulletin that you dream of"... ??

some guys here know that i'm developing some sort of additing engine to vBulletin that will transform a simple forum into anything you need, with the features that goes with that. you can have a preview here: The Flagship: Multi-Types Forums - vbEnhancer.com ... we're rebuilding the site because it was closed down for 3 months, and we're re-opening it after spring-break.

for your information, we'll be releasing special un-locked versions for vBTeam and GYSN, so yes, instantly when we release something from the MTF engine, this site will have its version. (no need to fear for a nulled version)

i had a discussion with .Void about it last autumn, but i was on stand-by due to some specific situation, and now we're ready to roll with a great release in no long.

the engine will be Pure OOP structure, the version released next week will be vbulletin 4.0 ready... so please do not ask if it is compatible for the future... it is 3.8 to 4.0 ready. and maybe older versions, we are not supporting older, but someone can test.

So yes, i want to read from all of you. i may not provide each tool that would answer your needs, but at least we know the path where to go if we need to code something new.

someone already asked us last week if we would code a "Release engine" to let people create download sections on the forum... sure, one of our main bundle will look like "Members Area, Release engine, Support Tickets, Bug Reports"... this is part of our first pack of addons for the engine, so if you need specific features regarding these, it's time to post... :)

if you do not want to register on vbEnhancer.com for support etc, i will provide support here. remember though that i'm not on vbTeam 24/7... :)
 
From what I gather the software/addon will allow you to transform your forum sections to be very specific if you choose to do so So if you wish to have a section devoted to blogs then this add on will assist in turning that section to a functioning blog area.
If I had to compare to what is out their currently I would have to say its similar with GARS, although from first glance much more intensive and wider range. It to me seems like an answer to many of the things board owners would be interested in.
Please correct me if I'm wrong here Nexia.

Not sure if these two idea's are do-able although some things that the larger social groups have incorporated into there areas such as band , and gaming, and I would personally like to see something in the area of Genealogy, as the script I currently use needs to be separate from the forums and separate log ins as well as lack of key features that I believe are fundamental in to produce a good product.
 
you are right blackknights.

basically, each addon to the engine enable a new type of forum... it is not aside of vBulletin, it change the behavior of your forums...

a good example is this site, vbteam.info... on the front page, you have numerous forums, all of them are just plain forums... but let's say the Hosting discussions need to look like products reviews, because that's the goal... you simply have to change the type of the forums so they look and act like a complete different engine, instead of being a forum, it would be a product reviewer... first post would be a description of each host, and people comment and rate the first post.

same for the release forums... instead of plain discussions, we could switch them to a "releases engine" which can be customized on the fly depending on the needs, and it look even better than the one on vb.org (which is bland for me)

an Articles section?... switch to a real articles look, more like blog display, with footnotes and related links section.

ok, it may look like GARS in logic, but it's way beyond GARS, because gars is way too heavy for the results. also, GARS force you to load your database with a lot of functions and settings, and it is too old to fit vb 4.0 ...

some have requested the vbCover Magazine product... independant magazine with a lot of duplicate from the vBulletin engine itself... WHY DUPLICATE... we chose to simply use the existing stuff inside vBulletin and give more flexibilities to the forum itself...

one of the thing that is way more pratical than anyother engine, MTF let you choose what the users can globally search or not... the admin can select to disable some type to not be searchable.. so all the forums with that type will not be searchable from the main search box, they will only be searchable per type .. ex:

1- you want to search the whole forum but not the articles... you uncheck the "articles" choice in the search box
2- admin can activate the "last X articles" in vbAdvanced, and activate the "search in articles" search field in that block, which will instantly show latest threads from any forum where the type is "articles"...

that's simple, isn't it?!

hum, interesting, i'd like to read more about what you'd be interested in... some details for each tool you need?

2 years ago i wrote a addon that was merging some vb threads with MacFamilyTree, but it was pretty simple as the software was saving its data in MySQL format already... it would be something different to consider generating a genealogy tree with the forum content... but doable for sure...

genealogy forum would be more tending to a forum listing, each sub-forum is a family, or member of the family, and the display of the forums have to be similar to the trees... look at the last message, copy/paste it in a html file and preview it, it's that simple, and i can do it as quickly as in that example... : Styling a nested list with CSS to look like a tree

actually i coded it myself... and GARS was a job i asked to be done by the original author, which never delivered anything i was waiting for... (ok, like vBlogetin which i lost 5000$ for...)

Not sure what your thoughts would be in using the script I have now in use it lacks features that I see needed.
This script is paid for by me so it is not nulled or other wise if this matters to you. Using it as a base model to build off and some how to incorperate it to what your goals are headed.
 
we could discuss this once the MTF engine is released and the basic package is up... this is more complex than just a template edit.. :)

Looking forward to release and if you need a beta tester in the area that I am looking at please feel free to let me know. Also what kind of concept list you may need in future.

LOL so true looking forward to release date its been awhile since something VB related was actually exciting enough for me to look forward to as VB in general have been dropping the ball in many ways.

After reading this, I think I now understand what you were asking, and I know of something which MANY would benefit from... me, and my forum members included.

Although please excuse me if I've misunderstood what you were asking.



OK.... let me begin my dream :D .........

We all know of VBGarage, and some other scripts that are 'OK', but- if something could be done to one forum section where users can start a thread in a specific forum, and have the options to enter car make, model, colour, engine, etc etc- This would be fantastic.

Users replying to the thread would only be able to comment. No links, no images or whatever.

It could also possibly have an Ajax 'Rating' system where users could rate the thread starters car.

Users should ideally be able to start more than one thread in the forum, as although the creators of VBGarage have not realised- Some people do own more than 1 car.

OK- There's also VHoist, but lets be honest- Do we really want to ask our members to go and register on another website? No.


Why?

Because:

  1. The majority are lazy
  2. They have already registered on OUR car site, so wy should they need to register elsewhere, just to show off their car pics/ spec?
  3. If VHoist someday disappeared, after 1000's of OUR members have parked their cars on their site- What then?

Don't get me wrong- VHoist has some very good aspects about it.

  1. When you 'park' your car(s), they are displayed on all forums using VHoist
  2. If you add a new mod to your car (New exhaust for example); you update your garage on the VHoist website, and it automatically updates on all the forums that are using VHoist (That you have your car parked on).

If you go to the coders website and checkout the screenshots, you will see just how good this looks.

Now, my point is- All these add-ons/ hacks have good & bad things about them.

If I were a coder, or knew where to start- I would be ripping these apart, trying to build the ultimate VBulletin garage mod/ addon/ hack/ whatever- ever!

There is plenty demand for such a perfect mod, and if you are looking for challenge- This could well be it.

If you ever consider taking this on; Drop me a PM and I'll be glad to help out with ideas (Believe me, I have lots of them)- I just can't code. :)
 
a "garage-like" engine is on the road, that's mainly why the MTF is coded right now... not only to mimic existing garages, but to make them way more efficient and complete. your request is fair and is noted for our Garage roadmap.

not only you can have a Garage with MTF, but you can add more features to it than what we provide as default configuration, without the need to recode the entire stuff *(GARS is too demanding).

Two years ago i was asked to code an engine with all the possible features for a Garage, with custom fields, specific permissions to see different fields, different displays depending on the forum (sub-forums are for sub-models), with profile listing, main page to display latest cars, etc, portal blocks, image uploads, and strange feature like "benchmark uploads"... ya know, the files you can grab when you make physical tests of your cars in a garage, i miss the name of it...

anyway, there was a ton of things added to the typical garage, and i think it will be pleasing a lot of guys here... :)

Very nice to hear.

I'm actually looking forward to this more than anything else in VBulletin.
 
Sorry if I have misunderstood the concept here, but is this a mod that is totally editable for different uses.

What I mean to say is this... could the input fields be edited for different purposes, add dropdown selection boxes, radio buttons etc etc and name them as you want them to be.

If this is the case then I think this will be a truely awesome mod and just what I am looking for. I have been working on a complete review forum, and this would be awesome for my needs.

That's right Termy, the goal is to have an engine that let you configure any kind of "reconfiguration" per forum, that means you can add fields, dropdowns, add functions to these fields, etc... we will provide a range of ready-made solutions, like a garage, personal ads, etc, but you can, as a coder or a developer, create your own addon to the core system... as nobody hav e the same idea of how ideal a tool can be, we let the door open to variations... so you can modify an existing ready-made solution... :)
 
Thanks for clearing that up for me, and maybe more people.

I can see this being a really usefull mod. Unfortunatly I am not in a position to add anything to this project... but certainly will be using it if/when it has been developed.

I, like many other people cannot wait to see this in action.
