ok i have tryed:

Elgg = not what i was thinking, was too hard and complicated and just didnt interest my members
phpizabi = same as above very dull boring and extremely confusing.
Dolphin = looks amazing would love to try it but there appears to be alot of bugs in this and it keeps giving a database error.
i have seen the mod for a phpBB forum to make a myspace profile but it doesnt really hold a professional look that i am after.

SO WHAT MY QUESTION IS....

can anyone recomend any other free myspace clone to try???? or should i just give up>

^ They're after a script to start their own site like myspace, not some way to customise their profile.

But... don't we already have enough social networking sites? Why would yours be different?

That's exactly what I said. I said they would need something different that's out there i.e. a custom built script because Social bookmarking sites are already a saturated market with the likes of Myspace, Facebook, Virb etc etc.
well this is for a car club so is why it needs to be free and is basicly for the members not really for any competition with myspace.

i think i may be getting boomex up n running but i will see what happens

thanks for the comments though
Why would people want to use your myspace clone........................ when they can just use myspace?
why would anybody want to use myspace, period...?
Hey, this isn't a myspace bashing thread! *pout* Myspace is a useful way to keep in touch with your friends. If you're 15.
double that and add a bit, then you'll understand I'm far too old to compute MySpace and it's validity. I understand it's good for networking and bands and music etc...but it's soooooo badly built! hence my preference for facebook and bebo and virb - the last two being so easy to brand and customise. Anyway I got the wrong and of the stick with this thread - I thought they wanted to customise a myspace page, not build a new networking sight...*slapped hands...

I'm using this free tool from in2community.com. It's beta, but it seem to be working - you might want to save yourself the headache and start with this and build from there.
Have a look at the free version of http://communityserver.org/
