Getting popular in Google... getting linked.

I know that one way to get popular in goggle is to get popular sites to link to you. How can I find sites that will link to me? And, how do I go about asking them to link to me? Getting links from directories are usually relevant links, and some can help boost your PR if they link to you directly. Usually, if you have a site, you should know of a few others that match interest, in which case you could link to them first, and then ask them nicely in an email if they'd like to link back to you.To find more sites, look up keywords relevant to your site in Google --- usually good ranking sites have good pagerank (though not always).
