xml/ajax questions

I was wondering if someone could explain how sites such as Wired.com and other news sites use "00, 00.html" files with sarissa and xml, I've been trying to figure out the underlying principles behind this, but have been having a little difficulty finding specific information about those "00, 00.html" files. Does information get pulled from a database, stored in a new xml file, and put to the .html? Or is information just stored in "00, 0000.html" format when it is saved by the people writing the articles? Because whatever the case the individual articles can still pop up in 00,000.html format in search results, I was just wondering if there was any kind of trick, or what the case is with these types of files and websites, Any info/help is greatly appreciated, Thank you for your time,

Sean
