There are many links in the template i am now using in blogger. Are they considered as backlinks to that site?? I would think so. A link is a link. I once thought about sponsoring a theme. The price was reasonable. Then I asked myself do I want links from some adult or porn site that chooses to use this template?
Now whether the "bad neighborhood" factor flows in reverse or not I can't really say. I think anyone using a template with a link should explore this before they use one. Just an opinion from a cautious old man. Getting the backlinks from any of the site is relevant and helps in increasing the SE rank. It got me some backlinks but of course some folks felt the need to remove the sponsored theme and designer links in the footer which did me no good. That was money wasted and i had to contact folks about that issue.
You are right about the "bad neighborhood" factor. No one knows if a template that you sponsored will be used by a gambling site, adult site or even other illegal websites. I'd rather do the old fashioned way and manually get backlinks because i know they are on good sides or sites related to the niche which will help in increasing the SE rank.
