Hi
I am in the process of redesigning my website. As part of the refresh process I am switch from Subdreamer cms to Joomla cms. The problem I have encountered is that in Loomla it wants to put the parent menu item in the url but I want / need to retain the url as it is on the current site because I have keywords that are making headway in Google serch position and I dont want to start seo / backlink building from scratch.
A friend has said that I can use a 301 redirect in the htaccess file to rectify the url problem. This raises 2 questions.
1 If I do this will it damage my current search engine position for my keywords.
2 If I do this do I continue building backlinks to the same urls that I was previously using?
Thanks in advance i thing this link will help you.

I am trying to set up Joomla so that the url remains the same as on the previous version of the site. Unfortunately Joomla wants to put the name of the parent menu item into the url. The only way I seem to be able to avoid this is by putting a 301 redirect in the htaccess file that re writes the url to be the same as the url of the original site. 301 is the SEO friendly redirection and wont harm any website if used in proper manner If anything, it helps serps. All your back-links will be counted as going to one place. As others have said, it won't hurt. Never (and I mean NEVER) move a page without putting a 301 in place.
There will be a bit of time until the SE lists the new address, but that isn't a problem because anyone going from the SE to the old will be redirected to the new one. Matt Cutts did produce an article on his blog where he says that there is some loss of PR/juice. Here's a snippet: Matt Cutts: That’s a good question, and I am not 100 percent sure about the answer. I can certainly see how there could be some loss of PageRank. I am not 100 percent sure whether the crawling and indexing team has implemented that sort of natural PageRank decay, so I will have to go and check on that specific case. (Note: in a follow on email, Matt confirmed that this is in fact the case. There is some loss of PR through a 301). Good grief! Thanks monkeynuts. That is not good news for some. I think 301 redirection would be the only right method for such transfer and it would help in keeping the PR juices from inbound links.
