There was a sig here until this bozo decided having more than one ID was a great idea. One good reason is to find out what makes them competitive, and copy it.
e.g. Find out who links to them and see if you can get them to link to you.
No competitor can effect your page rank in a negative way (besides really dodgy tactics). They can just out rank you. In every business, you must understand that competitors is always the risk but it's also helps for getting your business to succeed by knowing the trends that make your competitors outranked you by looking at all analysis. 1. In my own experiences, analyzing top competitors' sites would be really helpful for picking up useful variants of main keywords and backlinking purpose.
2. I think blog commenting might be the only channel for creating bad effect.

It's for you to decide if you're going to copy their way or try to mix it up with your current strategy Such analysis is good due to the following reasons:
1. To understand the trends in your industry/branch.
2. To understand why your competitors rank high.
3. To find new sources of links.
4. To find new keywords ideas.
5. To understand whether your site has proper navigation and proper landing pages.
And a lot of other things. Don't neglect this wonderful chance to rank higher!
