I have heard that blog comments show no more improvement in serp's so I was wondering if blog comments don't then what else.
Please let me know on which type of links should I focus for effective results.... If I understood well, your talking of no follow blogs' comments. Not all the blogs have this faction, there are many which allow back links.

Blog comments from high PR sites can be countable in search engines. blog commenting is still a good source of backlinks. Just try to comment on high PR, do follow related blogs.
