What does “//” (forward slash, forward slash) do in a PHP pathname?

I'm looking at a bit of script and I'm not sure what the "//" does.\[code\]$ResultsFolder = "./" . "Results";$CompanyFolder = $ResultsFolder."//".$CompanyName;\[/code\]
