What do HOTMAIL.com and others use???

What application do they use for building their free web-based e-mail service? How does it cold?
I mean... there are ready applications (free and chargeable) to build on-line shops and forums.
Is there enything similar to build Web Based Mail like Hotmail and others do???
If there is anything - what's the best?:confused:Major sites like Hotmail probably use their own software to handle webmail, but their are various programs you can use (both free and commercial). There's a directory list here:

Why do they call it "Client"?
What specific features must hosting provide for such purposes? :confused:can I ask you how you got to that particular page in GoogleI used the Google Directory (based on DMOZ, the Open Directory Project): http://directory.google.com/

Why do they call it "Client"?A client program is one which runs (usually) on your home computer and provides access to the data - though in this case, it is actually a website. A server program actually handles transmission of emails across the Internet.

What specific features must hosting provide for such purposes? Most of the free scripts I've seen use PHP or Perl; you might also find them written in other languages such as ASP. You need support from your host for the language the program uses. It's also possible to prevent these scripts from functioning, so check with your host before using them.
