What am I missing here?

What am I missing here? I am (admittedly) a novice when it comes to much of the web management world, but I have recently created a web site (using Publisher) and am now ready to get it uploaded onto the Internet. I am under the impression that all I need to do now is to contract with a domain space provider and then upload the pages. However, when reading this thread people are simulataneously talking about "hosting" the web site as being something different than posting the web pages to a domain. What am I missing here? Do I need to "host" my web site as well as post it to a domain?
