Website Speed - Do you care? Do you think it matters?

How much importance do you think Google and even other search engines put into web page loading times?

As we all know Google anounced a while back now that loading times will be considered when working out serps yet they also said it will play a very tiny part in their algo's compared to other stuff.

Yet Google have really made quite a big deal of it adding a section in their webmaster tools console and even have a section advising on improvements to further that they even promote the use of page speed addon for firefox and firebug.

So my question to you is do you think it plays a more important roll than they make out and do you care? Do you bother taking the time to make sure your sites are optimized for loading times?

Yes, IMO, a website's speed is very important even though it doesn't carry much weight compare to other factors like relevancy, topicality, etc. And it will play a very vital role as far as user experience is concerned. A slow website might lead Internet users to click that small, red X button on the upper right corner of their browser because of dissatisfaction. And besides, a faster website is a great thing in general. it's obviously YES. i'm wondering you asking that Quote: Originally Posted by Crococat it's obviously YES. i'm wondering you asking that I ask as people still dont seem to bother optimizing their sites from what I see, I totally agree its very important.

More than anything for the visitors to your site if the site is slow, even if only at busy times it will effect your bounce rate and the experiance for your visitors.

But I also just wondered if you think its more important in terms of serps than the search engines make out. i think it can harms the speed of indexing your pages, i even read something about that. can't find the article right now Host & Bandwidth both are the primary factors related to page loads, you must have heard that hosting is also an important factor in SEO. Results are displayed in Google to make users more convenient and faster to find out they need. Here CTR and bouncing rate is also considered. Bouncing a visitor from a page may be due to several reasons, apparently page loading speed the most, if the web page got a lower CTR it means its not satisfactory and hence are displayed below the faster and relevant sites in search results. Unhappy visitors = no referral links on other sites, social networking sites or word of mouth promotion. If you only want to know the importance of website speed for search engines, its important but its not the most important factor and there are many other more important factors but you should consider that visitors don't like low speed websites and they don't like to waste their time by waiting for loading your pages. So fast website is needed for both search engines and visitors. You want the website speed to be fast.

We had an old javascript based menu.. Everything was coded in javascript (i'm not just talking about jquery, literally everything), which was done by a software called allwebmenu 5 pro.

The menu itself was 300kb and took considerable toll on the cpu resources which meant it rendered very slowly in low powered computers, and IE had a big problem rendering it even on the more recent versions on powerful gaming PCs.

We changed it around and installed a html/css based dropdown menu with a small jquery file to allow compatibility with older browsers.

I have to say, the difference is like night and day! Our page views per visitor increased by 20%. Literally the speed of the website meant that users were sticking around the website for a lot longer. Cheers From a user experience, most certainly. You should be doing anything to improve the over all experience of your website.
