I have done 6 months of SEO for a site and yet there haven't been any improvements
how would you go about diagnosing the problem? what steps will you follow?

thanks Do you have a google webmaster tools account? Because that is the first place I would start.
I would go into my webmaster tools, check the sites keywords, sitemap results, number of backlinks, anchor text, crawl errors,,,,, and go from there.
Do you have a yahoo site explorer account? If not, do the same thing for yahoo that you did in google webmaster tools.
Do you have a bing webmaster tools account? Same thing for bing as yahoo and google.
