Using GeoCities....Yuck!

windows

Guest
I am new to page creation, and I have a few questions about what I can, or can not do using geocities. I started learning CGI and ASP and SSI, which would have taken care of my problem. However, geocities does not support these extensions. So I'm stuck with JavaScripts.

I have started a web-site where I want users to log in and make changes to the site. The stipulations I want are as follows:

1. Certain members can make only certain posts.
2. Same users can edit certain pages using inputs.
3. Each corresponding html page to display these changes/additions.

That's a VAGUE generality, so sorry if it does not help. But maybe these questions may make this more clear.

1. Is it possible for users to make changes to existing pages using javascripts?
2. Each page is in HTML format, so can an HTML page pick off pieces of a users edit page to display to multiple pages?

This is only the beginning, as most pages I have visited are not helping me understand JavaScripting.

Thanks a lot,Geocities does not allow its users to have password restricted websites. So using a login without a password is fairly meaningless.

I don't believe you can do the things you asked about using JAVA script. You would need to use a server side application or allow users to edit on their local computer then upload to your geocities website.

Your best bet is to get off of geocities and use a host that allows server side programs and the use of password/logins.

Look through the Domains and Webhosting forum for free webhosts that allow you to do the things you want to.

Regards,
KevinThanks Kevin.

I am able to use password-protected pages. I already have that set up. But, I do believe you about not being able to use JavaScripts for what I'm wanting. I really do appreciate your help tremendously though.

Thanks a lot!!It is technically possible to set up password protected pages on geocities but it is a violation of the terms of service agreement, I should have said that in my first post.

KevinThanks!
I appreciate it. I'll "peruse" the TOS. But I'm 99.5% positive to leave geocities anyways. It just seems more of a hassle than it needs to be, even if it IS free. LOL You've been great dude. Thanks a lot.Originally posted by NightEagleX
You guys here are great. I'll be sure to refer your forums to everyone I'm asociated with for tips and tricks and stuff.

Take care,Geocities now legaly owns any content you upload - so NEVER use geocities. Also, don't look at 100-freewebproviders.com or whatver it is. They are partnered with the top hosts and get paid to make them #1
