.us domain name

Im from the UK, but wish to delve into the us market.

I have a .us domain name, do .us domains work well in the USA, or am i better keeping to a .com to target both USA and UK?

I have tried a number of searches (using a US proxy) and failed to see any results with a .us extension? Am I seeing wrong data or is this normal?
