snooping through some competitors sights and found some images he was 1 in google image for. I checked his alt tags to see what keywords he had in there and instead it was alt=(his site url)
has anyone else heard of or seen this?
cant benefit the site can it? Alt text should describe the image, it's for people who turned off displaying images. I'm pretty sure alt=(his site url) does nothing to help the ranking. I've never heard of this but it actually does sound logical to get your site to the top of google images. Maybe I will do a test and report back. i am interested to hear the results of the test. for now ill just stick to keywords in my alt He might have good PR. Maybe thats why his image is ranked 1st in Google. I use keywords and not URL in alt tags Does he/she do this for every image on the site?
The alt tag is there for people that have images turned off and was also used for mobiles that could access the net but couldn't view images (I think my D500 does that), which is where he/she is making a mistake. Instead of having visitors see the description of the image, they now see a link, which isn't going to help them at all. Using keywords in your alt tag descriptions is only one factor of on page SEO though, and if they focus on the other areas like keywords in their content in the right places, keyword optimized title tags and meta details etc. then having their links in their alt tags won't really hurt their rankings at all. Quote: URL in image alt= instead of keywords it's weird...
I use keywords instead of URL in alt tags As already mentioned by others, the alt attribute (not tag) for your images is to be used to describe what the image is for those who have images off, those who don't use a graphical browser and those who use assistive techology to read web pages to them.
