I want to be able to send an e-mail message to a particular address and have the contents automatically inserted into a database.

Is it possible have this happen automatically whenever the e-mail is sent or do I need some sort of script that will run every hour to check for new e-mail (I'd hate to waste the overhead b/c I won't be sending message all that often).

Or can I not do this at all?

I'll primarily be sending e-mails from my mobile device to my database so that I can add information on the go.
Welcome to the forums

You do need a script to do this, but basically you set a forward for that email address in cpanel and pipe it to the script. The script will then be run only when an email is received (so no real overhead if it's only occasional mail) and that script will read the email, and put the data into the database.
