Understanding the competition

Hey all...I am looking for the best way to know how much is going to be difficult to rank in a good place a specific keyword in Google.How do you do it ? Do you just feel it when looking at the results in Google ? Or you are using a software to measure it ? If so, I would be very happy if you can share it with me...Thanks in advance,Guy.You can do competitor research manually. What I do is type the term into google. The first thing that tips me off is the amount of search results it returns. Of course 30 000 results would be less competition than 30 000 000. Then I check the amount of backlinks and pages indexed every website on the first page has.
