Hello,
I manage a site for a client company which was down between places 60-70 for many months for certain keywords.
Now it's in the TOP 5, been there for hours. Eversince it's up there, visitors decreased about 25 %.
Places 60-70 brought more visitors?
Unusual or we don't understand something here.
It's a travel site, so probably it's also a season related thing?
Any advice, comments are welcome! You said its been there fore hours? So I guess it came on top yesterday or today.
The problem could be thanksgiving... its a holiday season therefore the visits from some prominent keywords can surprise you. there could be number of reasons
1- Off season
2- Your competitors are working hard Quote: Originally Posted by davelev Hello,

Any advice, comments are welcome! You said that it's in the top 5 for few hours, Give it some time to measure exact numbers. Measurement and comparison of traffic should be done at least on weekly data. I suggest you to wait for atleast one week to have more reasonable gaze Admittedly, that is rather a confusing thing. As PromoDirect hinted, maybe it's Thanksgiving that caused the discrepancies, but I don't understand why. For about 15 hours+ it's been in the top, still there.
Not sure if Google is giving only me this result based on my IP?
Because I specifically logged out of any Google account to see the fresh Google.com results for specific keywords...
I guess it's because of Thanksgiving, weekend getting closer (it's Friday) and anyway, most of my visitors are English-speaking. Yeah, It might be low because of thanksgiving holidays, I suggest you to clear cookies and temporary browser data and recheck ranking (just to confirm ) You talking about a travel site when we are in the middle of a holiday weekend in the USA. Lot's of families are actually traveling right now and xmas shopping. Traffic will have it's ups and downs for the next few days for sure. Like people stated, give this some time and continue on the path that you are on right now.
My traffic dipped yesterday and now it's slowly coming back to the average number i typically get on a Friday. Asking about changes in serps based on a 15 hour sample is like starting a thread a few hours after dusk to ask why the sun quit working. Google does not distribute results over its search networks simultaneously. It is possible that the rest of the Google search world is seeing the same results quite yet. Strange!
I get these top 3-5 rankings on Google.com, but if I check Google through a US proxy, I don't even show up there!
Different results? IP-based results?
I am using Google.com, not a local site and I am also signed out of all Google accounts. Still, the result on my machine is different than through a US proxy!
How come?
Another interesting thing:
But on my machine, the site was much lower and 2 days ago it went high up there for several keyword combinations. It is still there, but only on my machine, not through proxy...
And, on the day it went up there, my bandwidth usage skyrocketed, like +40 % that day. Since then, bandwidth in AWSTATS is back to usual.
Not sure what these things mean.
In fact, now I'm not sure what Google.com shows me here locally is what the same site shows in the USA, UK, Australia, ... Kiribati... First of all try remaining patient for some time because even if your site reaches the first spot on Google for your selected keywords, within hours or even the first couple of days nothing might happen and even your statistics may not tell anything about improvements in ranks. It's holiday time and people are out, on planes or abroad even, you know, away from computers like the rest of the year. You just said about differences in ranks and that could be the real reason behind ranking differences.
Although you have been accessing the Google.com portal, but you still are using IP address, given to your computer by your local ISP, which is not a US-based system, naturally you might be accessing the international version of results and databases on Google. I guess when you access Google through using a proxy website or software which is functioning based on a US IP address, the results would be as if you were in the US, now you are still seeing the international results. From my observations, you need to give at least 2 or 3 days to Google to stabilize a ranking position.
Something will always surprise me is the difference between their webmaster tools and the actual organic SERP. For example, I have one of my main keyword ranking #5 for a while and signed off, then signed in the Google webmaster tool shows #22 for a while. I am not sure why there is so much difference.
Today, rankings are unpredictable because they tweak their algo everyday, so I just forget about it and keep working on my site. Natural Elements & Bermuda, Your opinions are useful, thank you very much!
I will give it a few weeks even.
What I'd like to know mow about are these differences between the "international Google" and the "US version"...
I thought there was just one Google.com, the rest, I thought are local sites.
I was unaware of an "international version" - thinking it is the same .com version...
I also see rankings going up and sinking all the time. I'm not sure if Google actually looks at my IP and "keeps in mind" what sites I often use and then ranks them higher.
It was so much better when there was just one Google... 7-8 years ago. may its not the right time, has something to do with ur industry hello dave,
Create a blog on that travel website and post daily new information with unique content. Add also relevant images and professional video on posts. I hope you will get more traffic for your website. Quote: Originally Posted by davelev Hello,

Any advice, comments are welcome! I think you should check what pages were visited, when website was on 50-60 position and what pages are visited now. At first need to find reason why numbers of visits dropped (for which pages number of visits dropped). Could be that it was a travel website. Although, I find it hard to believe that you were able to get more visitors when you were at 60-70 than top 5.. Should wait it out I suppose Have you heard about personalized search results ? For example if you +1-ed your site, is't possible to see it top ranked, but this would be true only for you. If you use "Chrome", search results are influenced by your behaviour - where you click and how often... May be this is happen because
# You treated less search volume keywords,
# There is some problem in your website like getting more time to load,
# For travel website some keywords are more searchable in particular season like in winter season people more likely search about hills station,
# Your websites update less frequently
