Does anyone know how to use asp or anothe rlanguage to have a third level domain on a site example http://anthingiwant.mydomain.com my web company says i have a wild card where if a user types in a 3rd level domain then they get redirected to my homepagr, but i know there is a way to have a third level domain actually be a virtuial directory so users can user a ftp program to access it.It depends on how your hosting company has your domain name and host records setup. I haven't ever heard of that called a 3rd level domain, but rather a hostname. Just like www.mydomain.com, www referrers to a host record. You should just as easily be able to create cars.mydomain.com or dotnet.mydomain.com, and then it would resolve a specific ip address. Once you have the domain resolving, then your hosting company would need to add an additional ip address to the server and in the iis admin tool tell iis to resolve the ip address to this specific web, and local machine directory.

Since you posted this to an asp.net group I am assuming that your hosting company runs on windows architecture.

This is an infrastructure issue, not really a programming issue.
ok my hosting company said theyd change any DNS settings I want, but what exactly should i tell them to change? Not change, just add a new DNS entry for the sub domain that you want routed.so, say if I wanted a subdomain called support.mydomain.com id tell them what exactly, sorry im a bit new to this DNS stuffS'ok....Just let them know what you want...And it's their job to figure out the details.

Tell them that you want to register the subdomain support for your domain name (yourdomain.com) and explain how you want to use it. (if it's going to be a seperate website, ftp only, whatever) and they should be able to handle it from there...

If they need any more specifics, at that point, they should know enough to be able to ask you for those specifics.spending your Saturday night on the messageboard... but this looks like a classic example of the pot calling the kettle black

.ok i sent them a email asking them to configer dns entry for support.mysite.com and ill take it from there, right?Yep....You got it. You should be able to handle anything else that they need.i got an email back that says its already confingured and that if i type in anything.mydomain.com it will take me to my default homepage in my root directory,. i guess i need to tell them to make it have a differnt ip address or to have it point to a subdirectory of my site, or maby i need to tell them to make it a unique website with just ftpExactly. Right now, they have a wildcard DNS entry that catches *ecrything* that isn't specifically set up.

You need to have tehm *specifically set the support sub-domain up to do something different...Whatever that may be. Point to another IP for FTPing, or what have you.
my hosting company says i only get one IP is there another way that only uses one IPI don't know. I don't know what's available to you. You need to get someone there on the phone, and explain to them what you want to do, and see what they can set up for you.i tried they dont know what the hell to do, can you tell me what i can ask them if they can do?*I* don't know exactly waht you're trying to do (other than set up an FTP site) and the possibilities are absolutly mind-boggling.

If that is all that you want to do...Set up an FTP site as support.yourdomiain.com, just tell them that. If they can't handle it from there, your only option is to find another, more competent host.

they say i cant have more than 1 ip on my account. anyways can you atleast gave me an example of what the DNS recore they would add would look like cuz they got a problem and dont seem to knowin a 3rd level domain the same thing as a namesever?
