The Good, The Bad and the Tag

It's Monday morning and the coffee is not ready but i found something to keep you busy for a few minutes.

Quote: Although the discussion on the ‘tag’ pages can be indefinite and can generate a lot of buzz because of their usage, I will try to squeeze in some more info, so please bear with me. I like to think that you have different opinions about this subject. It makes both for “it’s better my way” and hopefully some “what ifs”. If we agree on the fact that the tag pages are either good or bad it’s a starting point.

Many were the cases found in my extensive reading quest to find the perfect case – websites with tags ranking above websites without (gross approximation) and vice-versa OR websites that deleted tags in search for perfect on-page SEO (yes, yes, there’s no perfect on-page SEO) which either improved their rankings, witnessed a drop or flat lined. Somehow there isn’t a perfect formula, or maybe I haven’t found it. Continued at: http://www.searchenginejournal.com/the-good-the-bad-and-the-tag/30252/

Your thoughts on this blog post? Also how do you use "tags" on your website? Quote: ...Now you can let you imagination fly, my only tip is to identify a trending ‘tag’ page and transform it into a normal or a category page. Finding popular tags? I've kinda heard about this last year, but with a different concept. I think the one I read was posted/written by a black hat practitioner. Anyways, the only thing I can think of back then are seasonal tags like when there's a holiday or a world event (e.g. the Olympics). It would be a great idea as long as the 'popular tags' are related to your niche.

But this one (the article), the author's concept is to turn some of his popular tags into a normal or a category pages. I've done this before on my test blog, results were still the same. I sure would like to hear/read stories of the others here who have already tried and succeeded. I tag my friends on facebook... Good concept. I think it's always best to create pages for the tag keywords you will be using. Tags are great but can only go so far.
