In the past, when the search engines were much less advanced, meta tags were playing a major role in search engine optimisation. Today however, their importance dropped with the development of advanced search engine intelligence and only few of them are worth paying attention to.
Important meta tag which you should always have is the description tag. Keywords tag although worth having, for many years was abused by people stuffing it with irrelevant words and names of competitors in order to increase website traffic. As a result keywords tag lost its value, however it is still used by some search engines (not by google though).

Meta tags is onpage SEO, it's good practice to communicate to search engines what your blog is about.
You don't have to worry about that with WordPress, just use the all in one seo plugin and your onpage SEO is covered.
