Subdomains

Hi, I'm wondering about people's experience with using subdomains and the effects in google rankings. Many times that I've seen a site with lots of subdomains doing really well, it seems spammish to me.Right now there is an interesting case for this in google. Enter the search term "sales job wanted" and all 10 results come from different subdomains of the same site.Does anybody use and or recommend using subdomains? Is there a rule of thumb for how much content is needed before a subdomain isn't just another spamming ploy?I've only used subdomains for completely different sites, because I host off of my dads page, but I have two 5/10 pr "subdomains" (one is a subdomain and page only). As for your example, the first page is 3/10, then all of the other pages are not ranked. It wouldn't be too terribly difficult to get your page listed above all of those. Also the first 373 are all from the same domain, and from the looks of it all unranked. So subdomains don't need to be lots of pages to be successful then. I was worried that some search engines might penalize for abusive use of subdomains, but it doesn't seem that way.As for the example, I know that it's not a very competitive term, but I still thought google would only show two pages from any site no matter how relevant. Having different subdomains from the same site take the top 300+ positions seems ..... sillyBleh people just abusing the system, that is ALMOST worth reporting to google, just to see what they would say. It is kind of like if you were to search for 'yahoo directory' (just an example, sure it wont work) and all of the directories and sub directories of yahoo show up.Back to the original topic of this thread, I also see a lot of subdomains coming up on top, but I think this is also due to people using the same keywords to link to pages as their subdomain keyword. For instance, my pages perform quite well with subdomains, but those are also key pages for which I use top keywords in achor text to link to them. So whether they are ranking well because of a subdomain, or because of anchor text, is hard to say. Before I had links to them, though, they didn't rank at all --- so perhaps thats an indication subdomains don't get a huge bonus without anchor text anyway. So you had to get external links to each of your subdomains before you saw them ranking well? That makes sense. Are your subdomains 1 page each, or do they have pages?I didn't go through your Signature site, as I can't read German Currently, I don't have any reported backlinks to my subdomains (the site is only a month or so old) and I only started linking to those recently.Hmm. On that note, my sites could be ranking well because of the subdomain. So. I would say, if you can use subdomains, why not? Currently, they are one page only, but the intention is to expand them to include additional subpages (i.e., I didn't subdomain any minor pages with no additional room for expansion).Google isn't going to penalize you for using a subdomain. At least. I hope not. But if you have a few subpages coming off of one, then I don't think there's any harm in it.(PS. For a laugh, you could always use Googles translate tool to read the German pages I'm going to try this so we can get another sample and see what happens. Is the content in your subdomain unique or are there pages in your domain that are identical?I would make them unique. I have done this with a few pages with bigwebmaster and they all have their own unique page rank and backlinks:http://www.bigwebmaster.com/http://guestbook.bigwebmaster.com/http://uts.bigwebmaster.com/http://exterminator.bigwebmaster.com/I split out all of the discussion on making subdomains here --http://www.ozzu.com/viewtopic.php?t=1841
