is it possible to span a background image over a few frames on 1 page so that the only 1 image is required and do not have to cut up the image at the exact point where the frame starts and stops?<!--content-->From a HTML point of view I would say no, not at all. Each frames content is a unique document thus I'm sure this would not work.<br />

It may be possible with some kinda script... but isn't that trying to crack a nut with a sledge hammer? I would crop the images and go for a seamless frame design, easier in the long run and easily done. Especially if one of your frames is navigation where the image will not change.<br />
