The site that I am optimizing does not appear to have a sitemap. Is there some way for me to check to be 100% positive? why your site has no site map?

it will help to crawl all pages of site. What kind of sitemap are you talking about
html or xml like a Google sitemap
you should be able to see it in the source code
or if you have ftp access to the site you should also be able to see it as well

unless you are using some pre packaged software, sitemaps never build themselves. If you want google crawl your site quickly you'd better to make a sitemap. Using sitemaps has many benefits, not only easier navigation and better visibility by search engines. Sitemaps offer the opportunity to inform search engines immediately about any changes on your site. He is right....this is the simplest way to check and create a sitemap for your site... Sitemap are very helpful for website in crawling every page of the website by bots. Sitemaps is one of the best thing you can do for your site specially if are trying to target locally, it will help your potential customer to reach you in much easiest way. Sitemaps will not push the rankings of the websites but they would definitely assist websites with more pages getting indexed faster, the XML version is great.
