Sitemap Priority and Frequency Settings.

I've recently rebuilt my main site and even though it's surpassed the level my last site was at, there is still much work that needs to be done such as updating some of my older and horribly structured nomenclature and articles.

Although I've always ranked well in google for much of my work, I've been somewhat put off by what has worked and what hasn't. I've also noticed that my main page article snippets typically index quickly in google but perform poorly only to be replaced by the full article at a later date with a much better SERP placement.

Since I've upgraded my SEF Component and made slight adjustments to my already indexed contents url's, I'm wondering if maybe part of my problem has always been my sitemap priority and frequency settings?

Typically I set my SEF Component so the main page has a priority level of 1 with individual article priorities of 0.8 (sometimes less) and static pages with 0.5.

I'll also leave Frequency set as daily for the main page only and lessen the value as far back as yearly depending on whether or not the content being listed will see changes.

What I'm wondering is:
  • should I keep priority and frequency settings high on all new content until I see it place well in the SERPS?
  • is there a set level of Frequency/Priority I should observe and configure more as a "set it and forget it"?
  • is there a correlation between frequency/priority, SERP placement and better SEO?
  • Do different SE's prefer different frequency/priority settings or is google the only one that seems to care?
Sorry if the questions are a bit dense but I'm sincerely curious about this issue.

Thanks.
