What would be better. Lets say you have 2 sites with blogs that sells widgets.
Site 1 was created using wordpress and a custom theme
Site 2 was created completely from scratch creating your own original code to manage the blog and ecommerce side of the site.
Now correct me if im wrong but for some reason I feel that google would rank site #2 better from the get go because it is completely new code rather than the already recognized wordpress coding format...
Which bring me to.. If you are creating a website does it really matter in the eyes of google wether you use wordpress of create your own unique code? Well I would personally use wordpress.
Wordpress has tons of SEO Plugins that will make your job alot easier.
Unless you are using the stock wordpress layout I really don't feel it will make a difference if you custom code or use Wordpress. Either way you would have a customized layout and unique content wont you? What does have some influence is the overall performance of the site (rendering wise) and how well the background coding is done to make the site search engine friendly.
There are a lot of Wordpress themes out there that have undone the natural search engine friendliness of Wordpress, hence why people have to bloat their Wordpress install with plugins to fix the problems.
