Hi all, I thought I was a member of these forums a while back, but either my inactivity deleted the account, or I am thinking of another, similarly named forum. In either case, I recently got back into the web design game, and so will probably be at least semi-active if not a regular here.
I have a client/friend who wants help creating a website which is optimized for search engines. She continually uses the term 'web positioning' and has a competitor who went from pulling in about 3/4 of what she does to pulling in almost triple the amount she makes by getting his own website up and 'positioned' as he called it.
I've never had a site design before which was focused on traffic like this, all my past works were sites who planned to have existing customers/clients/members/etc. log in and have additional functionality to a business, not a site for generating business. I know the basics behind SEO, but I have never actually done anything with it. So I know I won't do an amazing job the first time out of the gate.
Is there much more to it than the rather obvious short list of optimization techniques I see everywhere on a web searcg for SEO? I know there is something more - there has to be; but how much, and how hard is it to grasp/do?
How much ongoing work will be associated with maintaining search engine position once it is attained? I typically invest no more than an hour or two each month into a website I host, after the initial design is ccompleted.
What are current 'fair' rates for creating an optimized site, and maintaining it?
Should I even attempt to do this, or should I sub-contract it out to one more experienced, to allow better chances of success for my client/friend?
I know more questions will come up, but for now that should be plenty. Thanks!
