do search engines crawl the html code of a website or just the words/content ? They do crawl the code. That is how they follow links to find all the pages on the internet. Yes, they crawl the code. So, your html code more simple, more easier for google crawl.
That the reason why u should choose template support for SEO. Yes search engine crawl the HTML code of a website. search engines reads content only, try http://seo-browser.com/ this link will show your website like a search engine sees it. Drear, Google crawl each and every code, content, script and every thing. crawlers crawl website content but they understand html tag like
<title>, <meta name="descrption" content="">, <meta name="keywords" content="">, h1, <b> <a> and they crawl content which we used in these tags as well. does the google bot read banner links and text links ? Respectfully, y'all need to read Google's SEO Starter Guide.

Yest search engines can crawl both HTML and Content. If it cant crawl HTML then how can it identify the images and catch the Alt tags from it. how can it fetch the links from <a href> tag. For an idea of how the SE see our pages, view the source of the page and then you would get an idea of how your page looks to SE. For a more better idea of how the page appears to seem to SE, go to Google webmasters and then there is an option to view your page as Google bot, now check if your title and description is in it(it usually is) but it does not
