Hello
I have read lots and lots in this forum and now I would like to post a question which is confusing me for a few days. I would like to know can you get traffic and can you reach top position for a highly competitive keyword for example "Travel" . I am not trying to question any one just want to know is it organically possible with the tips of link building given here. The reason I ask this is becz you have almost half of the google first page filled with results from youtube and wikipedia and some other.
Any positive and detailed input will be appreciated as I really wanna know the answer here from the experts. Top position? You mean the first page of the SERP? Well, if you want your site to gain top position in SERP for a highly competitive keyword such as "travel", all you need to do is to optimize your site properly. Oops! Don't get me wrong. We are in a very competitive environment so doing it is not that easy.
By the way, I get your point but why would specifically target a high competitive keyword like "travel" when you can target other keywords and key phrases that will suit your site better? Just a friendly reminder, we should use keyword tools as a guide or a reference, not a holy book.
There are lots of factors that search engines consider in their algo. You might wanna pay special attention to the following because in my opinion, they are the most valuable ones.
Content
Website accessibility
Site architecture
Link structure

IMO, The keyword "travel" is a very broad highly competitive term since it's just typically one word, a common word that's very used and mentioned in texts all over the internet. But just to be specific the word "travel" is being competed by an estimate of 905,000,000 competing websites. see SERP at the same time it's Global Monthly Search Volume by users gives an estimate of 151,000,000. So YES, being ranked number one in the keyword "travel" would mean that the number one ranked website for this keyword would roughly get 151,000,000(result from Google Keyword Tool) of visitors per month just for this keyword alone. But that luxury of having given traffic is something that cannot be done so easily. Being ranked number one on common general keywords, especially widely used one-word keywords is honestly unimaginable to attain, but I'm not sure if it's impossible. I guess for starting websites it would be impossible since they're going to beat long aged established websites which dominates majority of the general core keywords in Search engines. I highly suggest that starting website should just focus on long tail keywords as it's impossible to get traffic from major keywords rightaway. My opinion is that it would take years for it to achieve the number one spot and beat long timer websites that sat on the number one position.
I suggest you read this related resource:
Targeting Keywords Within Your Reach Based on what I have been reading about the Google "changes"....they the "G" will be giving more preference to long tails.....(I may be wrong)..
Anyway that how I understand it...
So perhaps by developing long tails in conjunction with your high compete word, you may be able to "backdoor" the traffic.....
Then ....a piece of those numbers is a lot of traffic..... all this rely in get tons of backlinks more than anything else Quote: Originally Posted by johnsims5583 all this rely in get tons of backlinks more than anything else Not quite sure what you are referring to.....explain...
