I've been browsing the posts here for a while and I've noticed some disagreements/grumbling about the ethics of search engine optimization techniques. I'd like to know how you guys feel about the techniques of seo: linking campaigns, seo copywriting, pagerank channeling, etc. What methods do you guys consider "black hat", and which are ok?One thing I am strongly against is cloaking and deceptive redirects. Those are my biggest black hat techniques. I think linking campaigns are fine. The linking campaigns I have done recently have been just with sites that are in the same business, not a direct competitor, but in the same industry as my client. I also think SEO copywriting is fine, a good seo will make it readable by not only the search engine, but the visitor as well.Anyone else?Hi,Just my 2 cents.Advertising that you are selling PageRank is a good way to get banned. If you are selling run of site 11 PR8+100+PR7s+1000s of PR6sThe best way to sell ad space is blind auction. Here is a great site for that http://www.linkadage.comYou can get some good deals on ebay sometimes as well.I have bought run of site 1000 page link ad space before and only about the first 20 links will show up. So all the cross linking that you do will only really make for so much PR gains. Most of the links that show up on my link popularity checks are from reciprocal links and links from other sites that I own. Not from the sponsored advertsising that I have bought. My site shows up first for some google searches and it is only PR5 with less than 400 inbound links, only 34 of those link are form Google PR4 and higher pages.Cross linking is a good thing, but it only counts so much on your SERPS.Furthermore I don't have any ethical reservations selling sponsored advertisements. I don't sell ad space to spam google. If you look up the top PR sites on Google almost all of them sell advertising on their websites. They are hording all the good keywords. But they also have TV ads.Anyhow the ony reason you want to boost your pagerank is so other sites will trade links with you or so you can sell that ad space.I you don't break the rules you won't have any issues.Another thing that will get you banned is selling ad space to RX and Gambling. Those kinds of sites are the leading link buyers, and Google knows it.Don't link to any sites that are PR bannedDon't buy links on PR banned sites.Stay away from junk ad sites.Have some kind of real content on your site.Keep the links as relavent as possible.A lot of sites sell ad space. The most expensive I've seen so far is a link on the front page of foxnews.com. I think the links are going for like $12,000 a month and there are like 9 advertisers on there.12000 dollars ?that's a lot of $$ we are talking about..I wonder if that is the most expensive ad around ?For $12,000 Dollars per month you could buy 300,000-400,000 inbound links, or for that matter you could buy your own TV ads, or advertise 600 newspapers, or 40 national magazines, or buy 48,000,000 PPC search visitors.Foxnews.com Ranks 354 on Alexa.com that means they get a load of visitors. It would be worth it to a person promoting a product that went along with a news program. If you were seriously considering the purchase, good for you.I happened to notice that you guys were discussing your views on SEO marketing. Since you all seem to be in favor of it, I thought you might be able to help us out. We are looking for sellers of billboard ads and 1 page advertising on sites with at least PR3 on the main page and a link to the ad space page. We budgeted $20 to $50 per ad depending upon your site's PR. Thanks guysPlatinum Television Grouphttp://www.platinumtelevisiongroup.comDark_Matter wroteersonally, I think a site should be designed for the user. SEO should only be done to ensure the site is recognized and indexed. What many people attempt to accomplish through SEO-Techniques will occur naturally over time, if the site is friendly and the internet community find it resourcefull.Competing for search engine traffic has become very difficult. That's why you should focus on users and hope recognition is gained from the user base word-of-mouth. JMTC...Traffic in it self is not that important if it is not quality traffic, if you pay a lot for advertising on a site that does not give you the kind of traffic you are looking for you are still waisting lots of money.
