To be honest, when I read the title of this blog post at SEO.com in my reader, I was expecting more. However, it raises a great point we don't often hear about.

The idea of using averages to measure out the competition level of a niche/vertical/industry.

Anyone doing it this way?

Or are you mostly relying on data provided from SEO Elite, Market Samurai, TT, and manual indicators right now?

SEO.com hasn't been known as the best SEO resource site on the web, but they revamped a few months ago and have been doing a much better job from what I have seen. Personally, I target words after some keyword research. I could care less about my competition. Except in a very few case, such as established, highly competitive, been around a long time, niches.

I'm no super star, but I get results. To look at your competition, and then make a decision, would be like training for the Olympics, finding out your biggest rival is competing, and deciding to bow out or not give it your best.

Anything can be achieved, but it all comes down to time, effort, patience, persistence, knowledge, and maybe money. wow! This would be the first time that I have encountered a really great article about SEO. This post discusses all the necessary factors that needs to be done if you want to go beyond your competitors. I am so glad you've shared this post

With all due respect, you have not addressed the OP's question.

If you really haven't ever seen any good SEO articles, check this SEO Tips thread. It frequently refers to excellent SEO articles. Seo Elite & Market Samurai are great ways to determine competition on keywords. But Instead I use "SAT" which is much easier because I can throw in my own QSI "quality score indicators" to search against.

For Example:
I can set it up to only find keywords in my keyword list that meet the qualifications of:
SPR: Searches Per Month
GCP: Google Competing Pages

- 1000+ SPR + 0-35,000 GCP

Therefore, when I search through my keyword list in SAT it will find all keywords that...
- Have at least 1000 or more searches per month
AND
- Have any between 0 - 35,000 Competing Pages In Google

You can also do more stuff like, find keywords that have "diet" in it. Or keywords that have less than 5 words in them.
