Hi guys,

I was analyzing Search Engine Website today. I found that they have 5 H1 tags on home page. Those tags were from post titles.

Simply means SEL has not followed the basic rule of 1 H1 tag on page. Still the site has PR7 and ROXX.
Ok, I was talking about Home Page.

Whe I went through 1 blog I again realized 4 H1 tage being used.
One of the tag was "Get Our News, Everywhere!" Still the blog ranks and the site!!

Im dam confused. Should we still follow the 1 H1 tag rule of just put anything in H1 and stuff it everywhere. Why shouldnt we ? When SEO Guru Danny can do it!!

Answer guys!!
Thanks h1 tag make matter but not that so much you can use but if you wont then also no issue Actually, according to Google's Matt Cutts, you CAN have more than one H1 tag on a page. It depends on how many words are on that page.

In the case of Search Engine Land, and many other websites for that matter, it is posting new articles on the homepage that are eventually moved to a different menu tab when they are replaced by newer articles.

Many websites, like SiteProNews for example, and blogs regularly do this.

Again, it doesn't violate any Google rule. The rule I follow is one H1 tag per 1,000 words of content. If you don't have that many words on your homepage, stick to one H1 tag and use H2 for subordinate headings. With due respect to Matt Cutts, he is not a web designer/developer, accessibility expert nor a usability expert. He's the head of Google's spam department.

Ya, he says Google can figure things out if you code incorrectly but there is more to life than Google.

From Google's SEO Beginner's Guide page 20 (available at Search Engine Optimization (SEO) on Google's site) :
Quote: Heading tags (not to be confused with the <head> HTML tag or HTTP headers) are used to present structure on the page to users. There are six sizes of heading tags, beginning with <h1>, the most important, and ending with <h6>, the least important (1).

Since heading tags typically make text contained in them larger than normal text on the page, this is a visual cue to users that this text is important and could help them understand something about the type of content underneath the heading text. Multiple heading sizes used in order create a hierarchical structure for your content, making it easier for users to navigate through your document.
...
Use headings sparingly across the page

Use heading tags where it makes sense. Too many heading tags on a page can make it hard for users to scan the content and determine where one topic ends and another begins.

Avoid:
-excessively using heading tags throughout the page
-putting all of the page's text into a heading tag
-using heading tags only for styling text and not presenting structure
(highlighting by yours truly)

Now, why do the big guys get away with this? Because of who they are plus at one point they were a no body like you and me. They have worked hard to gain respect in their communities and amongst their followers hence they have tonnes of incoming links, quotes and other references to them that help override the poor page construction.

It just happens the subject of headings came up today on WebAIM's discussion list. This is what a person who uses assisitive technology to surf said:
Quote: Hi

Just chiming in as a user.
I often use "h" to navigate throughheadings when discovering a new
page. I don't like multiple h1s on the page, I just want a single h1
elemnt on that pgae, one that takes me to the main area of the page.
The other thing I likeis consistency in headings, in other words, that
groupsoflinks or parts of a page have the same level headings, be it
h2, h3 or some other level.
I don't like, say, the navigation area to be h2, the "contact us" area
to be an h3 and so on.
Good exampes is, for instance, www.nhl.com/scores .. at night (EST)
there are tables for each on-going game with the live scores updated,
"on-going" "final" and "news" are the main sections and they are all
h3, so I can easily jump between them. I am a big fan of this typeof
navigation as long as it is consistent.
That being said, for a page like you describe, I'd recommend using
ARIA, I find myself using ARIA increasingly whenit is available to
jump to "main" "search" etc. Often it is a bit awkward to have a
separate and unique heading for "search" which generally is just one
edit field with a button, and possible some menus for sarch options.
The search landmark works very well for this, barring that using the
"e" key to find an edit field will also do the trick, almost seems
like a bitof waste of headings (unless these provide benefits for
non-screenreader users".
hth, or at least gives you a perspective.

Re: Headings and Navigation Areas
(the original question is below what I just quoted)

So build your pages for users so you too can become one of the big guys and can afford to do what ever you want when you are famous. Quote: Originally Posted by sankitg Hi guys,

Thanks There is NO rule when it comes to the use of HTML tags. Many sites utilize CSS to apply certian styles to different HTML tags, therefore needing use these tags more then once to keep pages "fluid". I use many H1, H2, and H3 tags for just this reason. Thanks Hey!! Great finding, I used to focus to use H1 tag only once in a page but now I know you can use more H1 tags. I don't think that H1 tag is really more effect for SEO because I have review lots of sites that are doing good on SERP and they haven't any H1 tag on the home page.
