A good article about how things have changed so much in SEO, a bit of a wake up call really. Well worth the read....
http://www.pixelrage.net/seo/what-has-happened-to-seo #4 is definitely worth noting, since I myself have failed with that thinking that the ranking was consistent and upon checking with someone from another country, the SERPs were totally different.
#7 needs no more mentioning, I do that everyday! lol I think that article is nothing more then fear mongering.
Does wikipedia hire agencies to make sure it ranks well? Or is it a combination of massive backlinks and good internal SEO? I read your article on link, once and and found that it is not so impressive. By the way, in my opinion, garbage site will never come on top. As for the case with Wiki they got so much natural link building going on they don't even need a real agency. Its their audience doing the linking for them. I do know for sure that Google doesn't turn up the same search results for one person as it does another. Lots of documentation has been found on the net regarding this.
However I will say, sometimes using proxies from other countries will help you see whats coming up repeatedly and from there you will know your geo competition. Fearing is useless rather than thinking about something creative and new is pretty useful. I think the major problem with us is that we follow people rather than looking and exploring something new for our selves. I am also talking about my self. Some days before I was screaming in an SEO group chat that I done everything right by white hat methods why Google drop my ranking a guy in the chat asked what white hat methods you were using. I said blog commenting, forum posting etc and he said wake up dude none of them is purely white hat method. The actual meaning of white hat methods are creating viral links. Well this is something new from a new dimension which gave me whole bunch of ideas. So I guess stop fearing and thing from a new dimension Doom and gloom article. You realized yourself - if people like your content there will be much less bounce rate. So make the content and design appealing and people will stay and read the content
