Resolutions and viewable areas

windows

Hi!

When constructing a website design, most would optimize it for 800x600 resolution and higher. However, what is the most appropriate width to use when designing for 800x600? Obviously, the viewable area (inside the browser window) is a bit less than 800...

I notice several templates are made with header- and other graphics at the full 800 pixels, which naturally causes a horizontal scroll bar when using 800x600 - are they just plain ignorant/stupid or is there possibly some valid reason for this?

Thanks,
The lowest live space you should design for is (accounting for Netscape/Explorer) 778*406 on a pc and 751*427 on a mac, that is obviously at a 800*600 screen res. Various versions of explorer and netscape have diffrent live spaces, those just quoted would be the lowest of versions 5+. Combining these two you get 751*406.
