Reciprocal Links - when to say 'Yes!'

Reciprocal links no longer have the value they used to. On this basis, can we have some specific rules on when its a good idea to swap links. I have been getting some conflicting info on this.

For instance: Only swap links if....
1) There site is of a related topic. (good keywords), and
2) They have equal or higher PR then your site, and
3) There link page has less then 40 links, and
4) There link page has PR, and

All of the above or reject the doing reciprocal links. This is my example......but please could you let me know your rules for exchanges. I do not think there is a rule.

Link is a link no matter reciprocal or one way. Relevant or not, even a forum signature. Quality links are better of course, but quantity is very important too. It is better to have reciprocal links which are quality sites with decent and related niche as your site plus a good content and pr as well. Unlike linking to many sites with high pr which are not that informative..though it's the tough think to do hunting for link partners with quality..I'll stick with quality rather than quantity.. I think both are important reciprocal links can build a sites stability by shear number of links. I also think back links and content are just as important. Blogroll exchange is a great way for bloggers to exchange links as long if it is related blogs.

There is nothing wrong when websites link each other.

For example, v7n link SEOmoz and SEOmoz link v7n. This links have the same value because it is clear that links wasn't exchanged to gain higher positions.

If 2 websites link one another from pages called /link.html or /partners7.php it look like receprocal links with small value. Look this: http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/seo-mistakes-link-exchange-emails/ Link Builfding requires patience and time consuming, sometimes you may get frustrated of not getting enough results but keep on doing it.

If you send 100 mails per day not more than 10 people will respond.

If you have added 10 links in your site only 1 or 2 will respond.

I am telling you with my experience.

So do not loose patience keep going, you will get result. I don't care whether the site has high PR or not.. all i care is if the links you want to exchange with is relevant to you.. just don't link to bad neighborhood and don't do excessive link exchange.. Reciprocal linking shouldn't be done excessively. Make sure about the placement of your link.

As for me, I consider a few of these:
- Link Page should be indexed in Google or other SE's.
- Check if the page you are linking to is not a bad neighborhood.
- High PR would be great but is not that important for me.
- Relevant and Quality sites.

just my opinion...

- Suprising responses. I had understood that outgoing links leak PR/value from your site and that you should therefore consider who you link to carefully. By reading the responses 'it appears' that a site owner should accept every links swap offered......which I don't agree with.

Lets make a scenario here (made up site, story, etc.):
Bob has a website that sells 'authentic suits of armour'. His site is doing great and has PR6. He wants to grow his online presence.

Bob receives lots of reciprocal link requests and he is not sure which to accept:
a) Request from a website of PR1 that sells sponges for washing pets. They have a links page with about 150 links on it. YES/NO? and why
b) Request from a website of PR1 that sells sponges for washing pets. They have a links page with about 20 links on it. YES/NO? and why
c) Request from a website of PR7 that sells sponges for washing pets. They have a links page with about 40 links on it. YES/NO? and why
d) Request from a website of PR0 that sells 'Medieval costumes'. They have a links page with about 40 links on it. YES/NO? and why

Personally, I would say 'NO' to (a) + (b) as they have lower PR then Bob, they are not related, and for (a) it has too many links on that page.

I would say YES to (c) as it has a higher PR then Bob.

I would also say YES to (d) despite the PR0 as it is a very much related website and should share the right keywords. (I might also give them some SEO advice to improve the quality of the link they have given me!

- Hi Zeruel, Your reply arrived while I was still typing. Your more in line with what I was expecting. It's bettere if you exchange link to related site. I agree on the first post of this thread. It should also be better if the number of links on your link partners are less than 50. My rules for exchanges -

Website pages should be cached properly.
PR is not so important.
Website Relevancy should be consider.
Healthy linking.
Not more than 20 links on single page.
No to very new websites. exchange links to those relevant ,credible sites and has a unique content and more backlinks.. For me:
1) There site should be related to mine
2) They have equal or higher PR than my site
3) There link page has less then 30-40 links
4) good content and a good neigbour I have in the past use to get 400-500 reciprocal links per months for several of our sites. I looked for reciprocal links to be relevant, no hate or porn sites, no more than 50 links on a page, no dynamic/query strings, english language. If it has a good page rank all the better these are far and few between but nice when someone throws you a bone. I do see that a large amount of these types of links is rewarded by Google and is what an older site has to offer.

I currently am working on back links, content and have added a blog to our site. I am not seeing the results yet but hope after next G update we will. If the site is relavant to your site post it. If the site your exchanging with is an authority site, then that'll be much better.
