Hello everyone! I have a hosting firm with around 700 domains. I have my own hosting infra structure, mail server, web server and backup web server at a datacenter. What worries me the most is the web server. Although I have a good setup, with firewall, a backup server on the same switch (so I can switch IPs) as the main web server, backups, etc. Ive been hacked and you all know how its terrible. we work so hard and someone causes us troubles. Besides all the worries of constantly monitoring, etc. sometimes I feel this is not a good life for me But I did move from being a reseller in the past to having my own servers and now I have the power of having my own server, being able to have my custom setup, not rely on others, have liberty to analyse logs, etc. Anyways, the mail server for me is ok, as I said, web server worries me most. I looked for some companies like Rackspace but found it isnt 100% fully managed. They have hands off policy for programs they dont support like control panels and coldfusion. Which place would you guys recommend where I could resell with my brand? Id need some place really really safe, I want a big player, like Everyone Servers or The Planet comparing to datacenters. Someone I can trust. Someone that can manage the server for me, really do it all. And at the same time letting me have powers of managing servers for me. I have admin time at my datacenter but its expensive and it just doenst solve completely this issue of not having worries, etc. Please give me your advice, this is my life Technologies we offer (Windows only) control panelcoldfusionaspphpmysqlsql serveractiveperletc... The thing is, if I become a reseller again, I will gain much less $$. But might be worth not having the worries of keeping our servers always up, etc. since were a small company with few employees. Or can I really think of managed hosting as really 100% managed hosting? thanks. There's not too many services I know of that will literally manage and support everything down to the panel. If there is any management company that does everything, chances are they would be doing too much to be "amazing" at anything specific. That being said, there are experts in everything from hardening the server to the hardware itself. Its best to work with these individuals to help have a diverse array of contacts who can help you in specific situations that may arise.I want a big player, like Everyone Servers or The Planet comparing to datacenters. Someone I can trust. Why do you want a big player like EV1/TP? If anything service won't be nearly as good, compared to a smaller company, with a more controlled growth, as opposed to TP and EV1 with their exponential growth (and pains as a result).Want you want is a company that's small, but not too small. Take a look at www.cartikahosting.com. Great control panel (H-Sphere), great network, great people. They are collocated in Colo4Dallas' data center, which is known for a fast network and great uptime - they also own their own hardware outright and have staff on-site, which is excellent.Just becuase a company has thousands and thousands of servers, doesn't mean they are better than a company with a few hundred. It's all about service, and you just don't get that from a big company.Managed hosting is only managing the hardware and the OS that is on the server, that is the same in almost every DC, including Rackspace. If you go to a larger player (there are not really many larger players that Rackspace) you will not get any better service or support, Rackspace is one of the best out there. The smaller players like cartikahosting are just a web hosting company that can offer you a reseller account or get you a set of dedicated servers that run a control panel like HSphere. You may get better one on one support, but you do not have the stability you get with the larger Data Centers that own all of their own hardware, connections and buildings. If you are looking at software like HSphere, I would suggest working with a DataCenter that you are comfortable with as far as the hardware and connections they provide and then partner with someone << removed >> to handle all of the server management, control panel management and even End User support if you wish. This way, you can have a fully managed solution regardless of if you want to rent, or own your own servers. << removed >>HSphere is just one option, there are lots of other control panels out there that may suit your needs, the best is to do your research, find out what is the best for you and your customers and then look for a management support firm that can meet all of your hosting needs. The major Data Centers will really only support the hardware and OS on the server, not all of the layered products that you may want to install including a control panel.Regards,CarmenWell I know in the UK Host Europe (Now Pipex) data centres allow you to place your servers there and book in time slots to come and carry out any maintenance on them, everything else can be carried out remotely.http://www.rackspace.co.uk/intensivewindows/The smaller players like cartikahosting are just a web hosting company that can offer you a reseller account or get you a set of dedicated servers that run a control panel like HSphere. Carmen, you had once, long ago, helped me personally out of a bad situation - and for that I am thankful - I am not one to forget such things, and as such, I will give you the benefit of the doubt here
I do not think you fully understand or appreciate the scope of our company at this point. We have over $500k invested in our own hardware and equipment and our own direct connections - and unlike many of the "larger" players or large data centers, we are carrying zero debt.
If you feel we are a "small" provider - that is fine - and relative to many of the players in this industry, we are in fact small - however, I do not believe you are in a position to discuss our stability or viability, nor are you in a position to discuss our relavence in a discussion of truely managed services.
We may not own our own Data Center, but, I do not think we need to, nor do we plan on doing such - even if we were to grow by several 1000 percent - enough tier 1 data centers exist which we can and do lease space from, where it simply doesnt make sense, nor is it our business model to get into the data center business.
When you consider that we have expanded hsphere to organizations such as GM, Sprint, Habitat for Humanity, etc - and customized hsphere to operate and integrate in manners you have not even thought of - as well as consider our proactive management, security, monitoring and 30 day backup and recovery solution to all shared/dedicated/cluster customers - I do not believe there is a fully managed hsphere solution comparable to our offerings in the marketplace...The smaller players like cartikahosting are just a web hosting company that can offer you a reseller account or get you a set of dedicated servers that run a control panel like HSphere. Just because a company doesn't own a datacenter hardly means they are a 'smaller player' nor does it mean you will have lesser stability or support than a company that does own a datacenter.
In fact, I would make the argument that a company that doesn't own a datacenter could provide you a higher level of service and support than one that does simply because they are concentrating on one thing - providing service and support rather than trying to concentrate on many things ie. running a building + supporting customers. Thanks for all responses! Cartika seems interesting, will look it over, contact them. Any other recommendations? Trying to answer what was asked to me and trying to get more help to make my decision... I dont mind getting a "smaller" player. Its just that there are so many hosting companies that offer reselling, etc... I just feel safer with a known place, but doesnt have to be a big one. Im starting to see that with smaller players Ill have more of what I want. So basically, for someone with hundreds of websites (soon 1000) like me, I see that I can either continue with my existing servers and get server management (i already have that at my current datacenter, but I dont have many hours and its not really fully managed) and have a bit more of peace, but Im still at the top of it anyways. The management helps when I need help, but isnt constantly monitoring all services pro-actively, really logging on to my server daily to see how things are. I imagined that would be way too expensive. So for someone like me, with hundreds of sites, I see another option of really outsourcing everything. I use Hosting Controller control panel (hostingcontroller.com), I think its not as much used as others. Maybe I can find a company that can really fully manage my servers? Or I could migrate to some reseller solution? What do you guys think? In a reseller solution Id have to find a host that I can really trust, and probably migrate all my users to another control panel. The host would also need things like Coldfusion, PHP, ASP (windows environment), Mysql, SQL, etc. I see firms offering things like Reseller packages for way too cheap. I just cant trust paying 100 dollars for unlimited domains where as now I pay much more to have my own servers. And I think I cant go away from the liberty I have of being able to log on remotely to my servers to solve issues, etc. On the other hand, if I dont need to, better. Id outsource my web site part and keep just the mail server with myself, as that one I can fully manage and recover with much more ease. What Ive tried to do (and I see some companies like Rackspace have this) is have a backup server in place, so in the worst case, in a few hours I can come back up. I cant even think of the remote possibility of losing everything and having to reformat, reinstall, recover from backup. So I guess it comes down to having my own infra-strucuture and having someone to help me off (any suggestions?) versus being just a reseller and earning much less $, but having no worries at all. Being able to travel away to the Bahamas and not worry about having to restore servers in case of a hacker attack Or are there management companies that will take a lot of care for your servers, as if they were your own, and youd have that piece of mind the same? BTW, when you talk about managed servers doing OS patches, that means you usually should not set Windows to do automatic updates and they will do it? They will just install the patches as they come? Sorry for the big mail. thanks a lot,MarcioYou certainly don't want to be moving 1000 domains to a reseller account, that's risky business. You should keep to your own individual servers. There are companies out there that do what I would call "intensive management" which covers anything and everything from basic security right up to even troubleshooting scripts. Of course you decide how far you need to take that management and the price varies accordingly. I'm sure you're aware that companies aren't allowed to advertise themselves on this board, but if you do some looking around you will see a plethora of companies that could offer what you're looking for. Though most are small organisations, you will find you get better customer service on a more personal level from that type of company. Although you've outlined the idea in a pretty detailed way, you haven't touched on the hardware side much. Are you prepared to move your domains to a new datacentre? What are the specs of the existing servers? And finally, what are you willing to pay for the overall solution?DanWell, Compuware (http://compuware.com/) can do everything for but it will be expensive!!Hi, DanThanks a lot for your feedback and everyone elses You wrote: Although you've outlined the idea in a pretty detailed way, you haven't touched on the hardware side much. Unfortunately, datacenter is unable to do a complete restore of 1 server on another server. Ends up I had a lot of work because I had to install all the programs I have on my main server on the backup server also. That type of work I wish someone already did for me or had a solution ready for that. I prefer not to move, but at current datacenter I can only have management time and expensive. What I really want is to have less worries, having to install updates, take care of the server in case of a hacker attack, etc. Somebody that could really take care of the servers, not just give me a few mgmt hours. I understand that maybe for this to be easier, Id have to adapt and migrate everything into some other panel that this company supports. It seems to be the case with Rackspace, they have a hands-off approach for software not "certified by them". Would they/someone do this? Ill do the search for intensive management and try to contact some of the options some people put here on the forum. About pricing, 2 Dual Xeons are around 300-400 bucks each + firewall, etc. So Im spending around US$ 1000/month+ with a HW Cisco firewall and other services liek backup. Management time I pay around US$ 500 per 6 hours and 150 bucks extra hour (Ive already told datacenter I cant go over 6 hours ) So Id be willing to maybe better spend the US$ 500 and even invest quite more, so I dont have to do the tech work at all, can focus on other things... Thank you, its being hard to find a solution, difficult case... MarcioGreetings:
There are providers that offer fully managed, proactive server management with 24x7x365 15-minute guaranteed response time to emergencies (more often than not, proactive), but generally their pricing is *** extreme *** compared to what is commonly seen on Web Hosting Talk.
The other options are to go with a managed hosting provider that covers part of the management such as Rackspace.com and iNetU, and then have a server management company pick up the difference.
Thank you. Thanks a lot for your help! What about the price difference, some companies I saw in this forum offer fully managed for 40 bucks a month while some datacenter offer packages like 500 bucks for 6 hours (and 150 bucks extra hour). I guess its hard to trust the 40 dollar ones, no? Thanks. Thanks a lot for your help! I don't think the price of this service (either high or low) should be the deciding factor, all other things being equal. I've seen great services at low prices and not so good services at the $150/hr end. The best suggestion is to look at the available companies around and ask them questions about issues that concern you - ie. what is the service level agreement - how fast will they respond to an issue - how fast will they fix an issue - how big is the company - what is the skillset of a typical support engineer - how many employees do they have - what recourse do you have if they don't live up to what they commit to etc etc.
TomThanks everyone for helping. I ended up getting a company that offers managing to help manage my servers at same datacenter where they already were. its working fine Would you like to share with us which company you picked for additional management?Hi,Sure, it was alphasites.net, one of the associates (Matt) I met on the hosting controller panel forum. Thanks, everyone.regards.
