Does changing the whois for a domain have an effect on serps, Google etc.. I've been asked this as I'm kicking the can around to sell Snerdey .. got an offer on the table that's got my attention but they want to keep my name on the domain for 6-12 months.

Still not sure if I'll sell but hey.. it's not everyday someone offer's you twice your yearly sales

Funny how little things like this can throw a spanner into a deal .. lol I do not have any specific answer to your primary question. My opinion is no it does not.

Cricket or the missing Tutor would be a far more reliable source of information.

I do have a counter question that you should ponder well; what is their real reason for wanting to keep you as the official owner? I would have to spend a lot of time thinking about the down side to this if I were in your shoes. Thanks.. yeah, they seam to think it will cause a slip in serps so I figured I'd ask.

That's the only part they want to keep my name on so I don't see an issue with that. Still have not inked this just yet but in these trying times one could use a shot in the arm of pure cash to invest in my other business ventures Quote: Originally Posted by Snerdey ...but they want to keep my name on the domain for 6-12 months. I'd be less worried about the SERPs and more concerned about what kind of liability this might expose you to. CYA Selling templates.. not too much liability At least, I can't think of anything. I've had it for 7 years or so and nothing ever come up.

Mind expanding your thoughts a bit more? Quote: Originally Posted by Snerdey I've had it for 7 years or so and nothing ever come up. You've probably kept it on the up and up. Just wondering what kind of liability (if any) you'd have as the registered owner of the domain name.

Maybe someone better versed in legal issues might wander by. Just my 2 cents here...

I would not even consider a sale that involved keeping the whois information in your name. Beyond being a serious ICANN violation, it opens you up for liability issues. Just an example, let's say they decide to use the domain to send out mass spam. Who do you think would be held accountable?

There can be minor changes in SERPs but this happens more in cases where a site has been purchased for the PR and then it is noticed by Google to be a completely different site with a new owner, like a dog company is now an SEO company. Ahh.. good points well taken

I'll make sure the whois is changed if we go forward. I could also stay on board for 6 months. It's mainly till they redo the site and add much content.

Na, there's no way they'd do anything stupid .. I mean, not spending this kinda change ya know. I've got a lawyer that deals in this type of sales. Been busy getting questions ready to send to him. But, I wanted to check if anyone had detailed info on the serp part.

Yes, Cricket I totally agree with the type of business changing would affect it.

Creed, no way they'd do that. I mean, they are template sellers too and much, much bigger company.

This offer came out of the blue so I'm still just pondering. But, wanted to get that part answered.

Thank you everyone So, if this all takes place I'll be able to afford to live in a van down by the river! Maybe even zip over to SA

I miss Chris Farley! As it was said before, in this kind of situation it is recommended that you do remove your name. It is better to do it earlier than later, and I really don't see any point of keeping your name for the next 6-12 months. Thanks.. well people little update.

I decided to turn down the offer even after it was doubled. I like the name Snerdey. I've watched it grow from 0 results in Google to whatever it is today. Rather personal nickname from my AOL days. Been working a while on a replacement site for it over the past few months as I've neglected to the current site updated as most just enter template number, checkout and save ya know. Spend most of my time editing templates for clients

Thanks for the advise, we all learn something new everyday. I feel sure a wise choice on your part.
