There is a domain name that is expiring in a few days that I want. If the current owner does not renew it by the expire date does it become instantly available or is there a grace period? (It is registered through godaddy)

Has anyone ever used the back order option for $18.99 and had it grab the name the instant it does become available?
One other question...
If you have your domain name set to auto renew, does it do it on the day of expiry?
