Professional Interface help

I want my home page to look professional with the text for links and such on the right along with pictures and such and than having news in the middle. It's hard to explain by I think that you know what I mean, a border down the left side to a certain point with links and such, news and other such things centered and on the SAME LINE. Hope you guys understand what I need help with and I hope that it isn't something that is stupid that I just over saw (BTW I am new to HTML). Thanks for any information or advice in advance.<!--content-->First of all I would get a sheet of A4 paper and draw out the design you want with 'Navigation Here' and 'Logo Here' and things like that. Remember to include dimensions though.<!--content-->
