I am working for a site www.hotelmountheera.net. "Hotels in Chennai" keyword shows two pages of my site in SERP. Google gives www.hotelmountheera.net in SERP page some times and http://www.hotelmountheera.net/hotels-in-chennai.html this page some times. What should I do to get a stable result? Nothing to worry here. Infact, you should be happier that you are getting two pages ranked for a single keyword. if you are targeting this single keyword then you can focus on you home page if you have a list of targeted keywords then do Off-Page for inner page as well, there is nothing to worry for above your problem First you decide you want these two pages ranked for the same keyword or not.
If you want only one page to rank then do the more off-page activities for that page using that keyword. On the other page which you don't want to be listed if necessary make changes in meta data.
If you want two pages listed for same keyword then its benefit for you. Because in the serp list there are 2 nos. (twice) your site listed i.e. one home page and other inner page, which helps to increase the traffic. Do the off-page activities for both the pages to get listed. First of check your website using site command to see how many pages are indexed.
Second, pages in SERP results depends a lot on user's query. If your inner page is well optimized with respect to user's query, Google will display it in the search results. I have done work on this kind of website. If you will see your keyword is completely filled in inner page and SE is taking it as ideal url for that keyword for your website. So now you need to work on your homepage,if you want to get result for your homepage.First place this keyword on your website homepage meta detail and then build some quality backlinks for your homepage. You will see results very fast for your homepage if you will do quality link building work.

You don't need to worry about this. It is very common with new new sites. Google takes some time to stabilize the SERP for new domains. In the mean time you should keep building quality backlinks for the page you want to be crawled Although it's nothing wrong in having the inner page indexed as well, it's better to drive the traffic on your homepage, in order that all your site would get a chance of being visited and the bounce rates decrease. So it would be useful to do more link building for the main page. Don't worry about this. you can fix this issue with sitemap. pick the appropriate url for the keyword and set the high priority for it Quote: Originally Posted by regan Although it's nothing wrong in having the inner page indexed as well, it's better to drive the traffic on your homepage, in order that all your site would get a chance of being visited and the bounce rates decrease. I would think the shortest route to the information the person searched for would be better. i.e. a specific inner page that addresses their needs. Quote: Originally Posted by HTMLBasicTutor Why would you say driving traffic to the home page is better?
I would think the shortest route to the information the person searched for would be better. i.e. a specific inner page that addresses their needs. Of course, the shortest route is best. I was thinking of driving traffic to the homepage in order for it to get ranked over that keyword too. For new websites, I would go for promoting the homepage first in order for it to gain visibility over any possible keyword. Not saying I can't be wrong, though. I personally prefer driving visitors to the pages which suits them the most. It's hard to believe that the Home page is a good alternative for many keywords. But sometimes when it links to inner pages with the exact anchor it tends to rank instead- Is this the case?
If so, just think about how you may get good and relevant links to the inner page and it will probably fix by itself. Your website keyword is still not stable that's why Google shows two pages which is more related to your keyword.
In this situation you need to decide first, which page you want to come up in SEPR and than do link building for that page only. Long tail keywords are easier to rank ,so target this with the most relevant inner page for better result. You will be in a advantageous position like you are now with two pages getting good ranks for a single keyword. Quote: Originally Posted by saurabhisbc Nothing to worry here. what I'll do is focus my efforts in only one of them, the one of interest trying to drive of the traffic from those keywords only to that single page Hi. Here is what I think the problem.
In my own simple view, I guess what you are experiencing is due to your meta tag keywords. Do you know about keyword cannibalization? Better check out your meta keywords then.
Keyword cannibalization is the aggressive use of one keyword/s to certain pages of a website/portal.
It only means that you either use one keyword as a meta tag keyword in other pages where it should not belong to. This is why probably you can see in SERPs your main page showing, then the other page showing too. Uniqueness in your meta tags also matter with Google bots involved.
Here is a good example.
When Google spider crawls your website, and then saw three of your pages using the meta keyword "Hotels in Chennai", it will be confused asking himself "whoa, these are all about hotels in chennai!"
Hotels in chennai (main page/landing page)
hotels in chennai (2nd page)
hotels in chennai (3rd page)
In this situation, Google spider will be confused on which to crawl first and which to index and give authority to for the keyword "hotels in chennai".
Since those three pages have the same keywords used, Google might mistakenly index and give authority to the wrong landing page where the keyword should be.
This in fact, will give you such results - having different pages of your portal ranking on one keyword. It may be a good sign for you having your pages rank, but it is like your own website pages fighting each other for a keyword in SERPs. It is very ironic right?
Also, when users search for "hotels in chennai" (since you have three pages for that keyword), results may either show any of those pages. When the user saw your page but seems to be not what it is looking for (example, the 3rd page showed instead of the other more relevant page for that search) the user might not be looking more in your portal or will not click on it, but will turn to other portal/ search results that is the closest or most relevant to their search.
So, in short, getting unique keywords (both targeted and meta tags) in your website is still a factor.
Hope it helps.
Thanks,

What should I do to get a stable result? do the redirection of the two url with the same pages and contents. you can have redirect 301 so you can have only one url instead of many. Redirection will not give you benefit in my opinion, it will if you have other link from non identical domain.
