Preserving Double Quotes (") in text field

How can I preserve double quotes in text fields?<br />
Scenario: A string saved in the database contains double quotes. How do I preserve them when they are displayed on the page?<br />

Especially, how are they preserved when I am using window.opener to bring back its value?<br />
