PHP3 to PHP4 Database Problem

I am attemping to upgrade from php3 to php4.0.4. Database is MS SQL using FreeTDS .51. The function sybase_array on PHP4, snly returns strings 255 Characters long, even though the field is varchar(8000). PHP3 returned all 8000 characters. Why the difference? How do I get PHP 4 to work?
