edit - oops the title should have been "peoples unrealistic valuation of domains"
Unrealistic valuations on domains is annoying me today. I'm trying to buy a domain from sedo for a new project, and I'm getting p**sed off with these sellers. I think a lot just post their domains on sedo to get some traffic to them.
Lets say for example the search terms my new site is targetting is is "fruit farm"
Fruitfarm.org and fruitfarm.net are both listed for sale. The .net is available for about $2500. The .org is just listed "for offers". So to start off I offered $1000. The seller responds with he wants $600,000.
He repeteadly asks for $600k and wont budge on this. I asked him to justify the value and this is his response:
"I could earn a living on this domain if I kept it up to date constantly and promoted it well. This is not a domain visitors will easily forget. Therefore I'm not prepared to let it go so easily. "
I think he's short of a few brain cells. There isnt any site on the domain just now. You can earn a living on a brand new domain for $5 if you keep it up to date constantly and promote it well. Why would anyone even begin to think this is a reason to value it so highly?
Fair enough people buy domains and sell them, its a business like any other. Its just very annoying when they are priced like this, theres no way the .org is worth over 200 times the price of the .net. Its a real struggle to find good domains and I hate to see decent ones sitting like this - it will never be used as the seller has a bizarre understanding of the value of it.
ok rant over
