Lets say i get a "owned" license and after 1 year i dun get any more updates from vbulletin.com is it legal that i "happen" to get the updated data from else were, like from a friend?

That is a no. They will send you an e-mail telling you to probably remove the software.
 
I just got busted, they called my hosting co and my hosting co told me to remove the files.. Lucky Im friends with my hosting.. I could have gotten fined as well..

nope.. because after they match your url, they will check the licence #, if that also doesn't match, then they know you are using someone else's vB, even though yor url is valid.

However... what might be smart and I haven't tried this yet, but if you got the source from someone else and changed the licence # in each file.. to your licence #...

but if they aren't lazy, they will check when your licence expired the DATE and see if that vB version was available back then or not... but if their lazy.. they won't check that and you can get away with it...
