Outbound links hurt PR? Fact or fiction?

As with a lot of things SEO, you constantly hear conflicting information, so where better to get confirmation that here (nowhere I hope...).

The theory is, outbound links hurt your PR.

Now, I can understand a list of say 100 outbound links maybe hurting your PR, but surely just a handful won't be a problem. So what is the guideline for limiting numbers of outbound links? Also, I assume this doesn't apply to rel=nofollow links?

Hope this makes sense and thanks for any advice.

Have a great day! Simple mathematics apply here:

Inbound link means plus
Outbound link means minus

To retain/enhance site's PR, you should have much plus than minus OK, so any outbound links can have a negative affect? And like I said, if this is the case then I assume rel=nofollow links don't matter, is that right?

Thanks. As a matter of fact, Search Engine like Google and Yahoo! have hundreds of factors that they rank a site by and that outbound links is probably one of them - although not one of the ones that they give most weight to.

Many people are afraid to link out to related resources throughout their copy. Many search engines grade pages not only based upon their copy and inbound links, but also upon the pages that they link to. Relevant outbound links to quality sites can actually help your own performance in the search engines.

All of your outbound links should not be link trades in one corner of your site. Try to naturally mix to quality sites in your site architecture wherever it makes sense.

Hope help

I may be wrong but I dont think the odd link in the middle of an article would make much difference, nor the odd link at the bottom of the page (ie where the web designers/seo companies normally put their links).

However if its obvious to google that its just a massive list of outbank links then yes I would image it would have a negative effect.

As people have said, nobody knows exactely how google works out the rankings and exactely how much weight is given to any particular component of SEO. Its fiction, as long as you dont have hundreds of links, or links to spam sites linking to other pages it wont harm your page rank!
