Oracle PHP CHAR() datatype retrieval

When I try to retrieve from Oracle 8.0.6 a field that has a CHAR() datatype with PHP, my result set returns only NULL values. I can retrieve the NUMBER and DATE fields from the same table just fine. I can retrieve VARCHAR2 fields from other tables too. Just the CHAR datatype returns NULL. Any help would be greatly apreciated. Thanks
