Optimizing Meta Description Tag

Every SEO says that you should have optimized meta tags, i know they are talking about the meta description tag, because this is what is shown in search engine results but does it means that you should stuff your keywords in description 2-3 times?
Please share your views on that Quote: does it means that you should stuff your keywords in description 2-3 times? My word no! Primarily you should look at your meta description as exactly that, a description of the value that you are offering on the page. I would question whether the search engines give any more value to keywords when they are used more than once anyway.

Secondly, you should look at the description as you elevator pitch. It is the first thing people will read before clicking on your website. It should convey, in as few words as possible, why someone should read that page.

Not only will keyword stuffing put people off, it also has the chance to get your website spam banned. Well, I have used meta tags and in description, the only care you have to take is not to repeat the keywords more than twice. Use keywords you want to target in meta tag but dont overdo it. Please share your views on that Hi,

In my own experiences, the 160 character-long meta description tag is enough for us to using ad-liked, keyword oriented contents there. Right, you might want to repeat your main targeted keywords there twice (no more) in a SEO and user friendly manner.

all the best, Metatags are agreed by most people to be of very little consequence to your SEO. Especially the meta description tag. Better to fouc on your title tags and header tags Quote: Originally Posted by createdevelop Secondly, you should look at the description as you elevator pitch. Not only will keyword stuffing put people off, it also has the chance to get your website spam banned. I think this is something that people miss. I always have to calm down clients after they get hyped up by some SEO about Meta-Descriptions and think it is the holy grail of climbing the serps. Like not having the spammy keyword filled descriptions the guy created for them are the reason their month old, zero link, 5 page site isn't #1 for "home loan."

Like you say, the Meta-Descriptions can show up as a teaser to your page for certain searches or be used by some webservices, but it is no longer a big part of rankings. "SEO says that you should have optimized meta tags..."

actually what they are talking about primarily or what is really of major concern is the Title meta tag and it is certainly one of the most important on page factors in seo. Cutts said at one point it could be anywhere from 2-22 words long. it's the first thing the spider sees and should contain your keywords and succinctly title the page, as it will help answer the spider's question, "what's this page about?"

as far as the Description tag is concerned, Createdevelop answers that well enough (although i personally doubt that stuffing a Descr. meta tag will get you banned; has to be a big infraction for that. keyword stuffing over all the site could you penalized though and that's serious enough.) and no keyword more than two or three time I would say in any tags - use variations, singulars, plurals, similar meaning words to capture more search results...

I still use the Keywords tag though google has long since supposedly pays no attention to it but i believe yahoo and bing still might. but it wouldn't hurt as long as it's not stuffed and descriptive of the page's content. Meta tag should be used very carefully. Metadata tags allow you to tell the search engines what your web page is about.
