Google Maps is good method and people are using this for listing their business in a particular location where they have.. But its not all that, because it cannot give you the best ranking as other factors work a lot to improve your ranking and they should be done in a useful manner. In my opinion you are speaking about google places, that comes on the top of result page when you insert your keyword. Whether google map or google places, you must submit your site to them. After doign some seo activities, your site will too, be available in it. It is old rule of google. Google owns those applications. Of cause, they can combine and utilise their features. It's not so surprising that the data in Google Map can be used for Google search result as well.
But for Google indexing service, it's independent from google map for sure. For local brick and mortar businesses Google map listings and the business's website combine to determine search results for the user's geographic location. I am in the bail bond business and maps listings play a role in my search rankings.
